Next to the famous wine
producing châteaux of Saint-Emilion, and close to the Medieval City,
stands the imposing architecture of the only 19th Century Château Hotel
of the Bordelais right bank: the Grand Barrail Hotel Restaurant & Spa.
The name “Grand Barrail” was that of an old charterhouse of Gironde, and
the castle was built on the latter’s ruins, under the initiative of Mr.
René Bouchard, malter and brewer, for his mistress Mrs. Godeau. Mr. René
Bouchard, who resided for some years in Saudi Arabia, had wished to
regain that particular atmosphere in the castle’s decoration. The «
Moresque » dining room, decorated with stained glass windows and frescos
makes it an original place in the Bordelais region. Attached to the
vineyard of the Château Lamarzelle Figeac for a long time, the Grand
Barrail became a Château Hotel in 1993. In 2008, the Hotel Grand Barrail
decided to give a new life to this prestigious establishment and have
undertaken heavy renovation and embellishment works. New owner, new
manager, new Chef, new ambitions, the « new » Grand Barrail positions
itself around three main themes: beauty/nutrition, cuisine, and
promotion of the wine growing and regional cuisine inheritance.
Surrounded by a 3 ha park, the Hotel Grand Barrail, 4 Stars Hotel,
member of « Small Luxury Hotels of the World » has 41 rooms and 5 suites
spread among four buildings: the Château, the Residence, the Maison du
Bien-Être and the Maison du Vignoble. Renovated in 2009, the rooms are
at least 35 m², and most of them have a terrace or balcony. All of them
have an outstanding view of the vines and all modern conveniences –
while perfectly maintaining the "château" flair. Rooms are
air-conditioned and come with spacious bathrooms, satellite TV, minibar,
a safe for your valuables, and telephone. Two rooms are also
fully-equipped for disabled guests.
The restaurant is located in the Chateau's most majestic rooms. Dinner
is served in three amazing locations: the main dining room, the Salon
Mauresque ("Moorish Room"), and the Salle Ronde ("Round Room"). In
summer, you can also enjoy eating on the terrace overlooking the park
and surrounding vineyards. All around the dining rooms, you will find
historic stained-glass windows, unique mouldings on the ceilings and
walls with perfect historic artwork. The chef prepares delicious dishes
typical of Southwest France accompanied by the greatest wines of
Bordeaux, harmonizing in a way that will enchant even the most demanding
palate. You will be able to taste new and unexpected dishes.
