Visit the châteaux and vineyards of Saint-Emilion
On 5,400 hectares of hills above the Dordogne valley, a great
diversity of terroir is home to a selection of grape varieties, chiefly
Merlot. Châteaux and winemaking properties are mostly family-owned and
of relatively small size (7 hectares on average).
-
The nearby tourism office (05 57 55 28 28) offers numerous trips and
itineraries for an in-depth introduction to the region.
- “A day of wine and relaxation” Vineyards & Châteaux - Individual
châteaux visits, on foot, by bicycle, or by car, accompanied by a guide
- The Saint-Emilion Maison du Vin sells wines from the appellation and
offers wine tasting classes.
The Hermitage Grotto
The hermit Emilion’s refuge is also home to a wealth of legends: two
pins which overlap when thrown into the grotto’s spring promise a
marriage within the year; sitting on Emilion’s stone seat offers not
only rest but the guarantee of increased fertility...
The nine communes in the Saint-Emilion Jurisdiction, inscribed in the
UNESCO register of World Heritage Sites
December 13, 1948 saw the resurrection of the Saint-Emilion Jurade, an
organization created by the Falaise Charter of July 8, 1199 which led to
the definition of the Saint-Emilion vineyard area. This comprises not
only the town itself, but also Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes (and its
ancient fortress), Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse (with its exceptional
architecture), Saint-Hippolyte (noted for its château, roman church and
grottos), Saint-Laurent-des-Combes (and its series of valleys), Saint-Pey-d’Armens
(with a very beautiful roman church), Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens (whose
menir stands 5 meters high), and Vignonet (surrounded by its châteaux).
