Here you will find the last of the Grand Hôtel particuliers built in
Arles by a noble family. It is representative of the beautiful
residences the Napoleonic nobility had built in Paris and its provinces
at the beginning of the XIXth century. Guilaume Meiffren-Laugier became
the mayor of Arles in 1824, and had a home built to feature his
prominence: the Hôtel de Chartrouse, today known as the Hôtel
particulier. In the 1826 Arles Almanach, it is documented that the
“baron de Chartrouse has erected an majestic abode that rivals those
houses of the Chaussée d'Antin quarter in Paris". Indeed, the
constituent structure gathered around the expansive courtyard is
breathtakingly elegant. The gate entry is given character with adorning
sculptures. The most important building is indeed very similar to those
found in Paris during the 1820s, designed by architects Percier and
Fountaine, especially the prominent modillion-enriched cornice,
horizontally affixed on the building's facade.
Brigitte Pagès de Oliveira and her staff will welcome you in a manner
befitting this XVIIIth century hotel, where the prestigious baron of
Chartrouse establishment flirts with refinement and modern comfort:
Private parking, under constant security, Satellite TV, air
conditioning, pool, High Speed Internet access... Take a leisurely
stroll winding through the charming narrow streets of Arles, along the
outdoor Provençal market stands on Saturdays. Nearby arenas, theatres,
and the banks of the Rhône are waiting to be discovered...
