Hotel Castillo El Collado -
Paseo El Collado, 1 , 01300 , Laguardia
Castillo El Collado was built in the beginning of the century; it belonged to a gentleman who was responsible for a facial soap factory. After his death, following his will, the house was passed to the church. Years later, the present owner, Javier, bought it from the church to convert it into a small hotel. Surely he had a very definite idea of what he wanted to do, because he spent 10 years refurbishing and decorating the place. The hotel opened in 1996. Javier is always there, usually you find him at the front desk welcoming his guests. The hotel is pretty busy, usually full, which is not a wonder once you see and stay in one of the rooms and dine in the restaurant. Each room is different; they go by names and are truly beautiful in every detail. The one at the top (second level) called Amor y Locura, which literally translated means “love ad madness” has the bathtub right behind the headboard of a king bed! Their gastronomy seems to be of importance as well, gourmet groups come here to try the restaurant.

Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao * * * * *
Alameda de Mazarredo, 61 , 48009 , Bilbao
Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao, facing the Guggenheim Museum, is the Silken Hotels' first five-star and the chain's pride. The GHBD expresses a contemporary concept that avoids ostentation and promotes fun. The project is infected by its neighbor, the Guggenheim's, activity and offers a space that contains a selection of furniture that represents the most emblematic design from the 20th century. Its singularity consists in the application of a concept of integral design, of great, formal coherence, carried out by Javier Mariscal and Fernando Salas with their respective teams. GHBD isn't only a hotel to stay at, but a colourist microcosmos that opens its door to whoever wishes to get close to it and have a coffee, a drink or eat in its restaurant. The atrium flooded with interior light is one of the elements that singularises the GHBD. On entering the visitor encounters a sculptural piece by Mariscal, the Fossil Cypress that occupies the entire verticality of the building, from the floor to the skylight that crowns the terrace. The taste for the essential that expresses Beltz the Black's minimalist scenography is transmitted to the food, where the prime material is the character. Eating in the Basque country is serious, that's why the kitchen is sat upon solid pillars, forged with intelligence and imagination.

Hotel General Alava * * *
Gasteiz, 79 , 1009 , Vitoria
Hotel General Alava is a place truly recommended because is that kind of European hotel from the fifties that give the feeling of a place with a personal touch from the owners, which is something you do not exactly nowadays find in chain hotels. Vitoria is a city, the same as Bilbao, not very tourist but if you go there, the hotel General Alava is a good place to stay. The location is convenient and the rooms are comfortable and spacious. It is also not a big hotel, which is nice. This hotel is not luxurious but is well kept and the staff is very friendly, always ready to welcome you and assist in any way they can. From the hotel General Alava you can visit most of the city on foot, or in any case is best to take a taxi, but try to avoid driving, because just as you should not have any problem finding a parking space almost in front of the hotel, it will not be the same in the downtown area, which is not more 10 or 15 minutes walking from the hotel. There is a cafeteria at the hotel, which is not bad, but being in the Pais Vasco, with such rich gastronomy, specialized mainly in fish (since they are on the Atlantic coast) it is practically a must to venture out and try any of the local restaurants, anywhere downtown.

Miro Hotel Bilbao * * * *
77, Alameda Mazarredo , 48009 , Bilbao
Although named after the famous Spanish artist Antonio Miró, this hotel, just down the street from the Guggenheim Museum, takes after the man who created it, Antonio Miró, one of country's top fashion designers. A powerful collection of black-and-white photographs lines the corridors and Miró's clean, minimalist fashion palette is used to good effect in the 50 rooms, where pale beige walls and leather sofas, black carpets and marble bathrooms predominate. Dramatic, heavy, beige curtains are used instead of doors to hide the clothes-storage areas and flat-screen TVs, DVD and CD players, giving the impression of an intimate modern theatre. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the front rooms frame a view of what will one day be the new Bilbao: a park and shops, offices and apartment buildings scheduled for completion in 2005. Staffs at the Miró are friendly, efficient and discreet: this hotel is all about merging old-fashioned service with idiosyncratic, modern touches: there's a DVD library with some very amusing titles and a small, up-to-date gym and spa with Jacuzzis and a massage room. The hip cocktail bar just off the lobby (where breakfast is served, as well as bar food) is beige and fluorescent yellow.
