Morat (Murten) is the main city of the Fribourg lake district and is situated directly on the language border. Most Murten residents speak two languages. In front of the famous city landmark, the Berntor, "Péntanque" is often played.
This lovely 800 year old small town can't be kept hidden from tourists. Lake Murten, which shares the same name as the town, has done its share in helping the development of tourism. Thanks to its wonderful setting, Lake Murten is a sought after vacation spot and perfect for day excursions, too.
The great historical significance of the town comes alive when viewing its town wall, extraordinary towers, and wonderful castle; a truly unique Swiss treasure. Murten's picturesque city center, arcades and romantic views invite the tourist to discover a special world.
The town and its lakeside boardwalk are just right for strolling, shopping or enjoying the sights. When the visitor can stay a little longer, a choice of fine hotels caters to every taste. Regional specialties can be sampled at many of Murten's restaurants. Evenings are fine moments to watch memorable sunsets over the lake, the Vully and the Jura mountains.
